Creating a Classical music streaming app for Presto Music
Presto Music, the UK’s leading e-commerce platform for Classical and Jazz recordings, sought our expertise to help them diversify into the streaming space.
Known for their deep industry knowledge, Presto wanted to develop a streaming app. The real challenge was that most of their customer base was adverse to streaming services and wanted to own their music; we had to explore different ways to encourage these users to value the new service.
Leveraging our experience from similar projects, we led discovery workshops to define their goals, audience, and challenges. Through short MVP workshops, we crafted a focused product roadmap.
We conducted UX research via a large-scale survey and interviews, to understand the needs, pains, and habits of their potential listeners and current customers.
This groundwork led to a series of design sprints, culminating in an interactive prototype of the streaming app, demoed with the Presto team and tested with customers. The prototype provided a clear path forward for developers.
Once the product launched we continued work, focusing on the core sign-up journey, helping them to redesign landing pages and the core proposition.
Results:
An actionable product roadmap for the streaming service.
285% increase in responses compared to previous surveys, with a 90% completion rate.
A fully tested, interactive prototype ready for development.
“The dynamic between Becky and Ollie is very impressive - Becky really helped sort the ideas into shape, and Ollie was brilliant at working with us on the app design. Use them, they're excellent at galvanizing a team into action.”
Matt Groom, Head of Recorded Music, Presto Music.

User research brings 147% increase in revenue for Chew Valley Trees
Chew Valley Trees, a specialist tree grower and seller, approached us because visits to their e-commerce site weren’t converting to sales and they weren’t sure how to improve it.
To solve their conversion issue, we needed to find out what was going on. We conducted remote user testing, which is where real people, matching the target audience, follow a brief to use and buy products on the website whilst feeding back on their experience. We also interviewed their sales team and customers and audited the experience of their current website.
The research uncovered that people wanted help finding trees based on their needs rather than by a product name or category. This led to an overhaul of the navigation and the introduction of a Tree Finder tool. Rather than presenting the navigation in a way that was understood by the business, we changed it to reflect how customers looked for products. The Tree Finder tool quickly and visually led people through steps that assessed their need and took them straight to relevant products.
Our aim was for a 25% increase in online revenue, which was ambitious. We exceeded all targets!
Results
85% increase in conversion rate
147% increase in revenue
29% increase in average order value
“Deckchair delivered. User research was not something we had commissioned before so it was a leap of faith. By finding out what our customers needed and building the website around them, it’s led to excellent results for our business. We are now getting a more steady stream of business all year round and fewer confused customer support emails.”

Sparkyard – Award-winning music streaming app for schools
Out of the Ark, the UK’s leading provider of songs and related resources for primary schools asked us to help them create a new streaming service, as a way to generate a sustainable business model and meet the changing demands of their customers.
Their first foray into this world, working with a large third-party web development company, Out of the Ark needed strategic guidance for how to develop a product, as well as UX expertise in defining and crafting a successful user experience.
We ran collaborative discovery workshops to understand their business model, market, audience, challenges, and needs. MVP (Minimal Viable Product) workshops and guidance created a product roadmap that was achievable and valuable.
Information architecture creation defined the app’s user experience, as well as the technical infrastructure and processes that would sit behind it.
A series of design sprints culminated in a designed, interactive working prototype of the app, enabling the team to test, market, and build the final app.
Collaborative user testing helped Out of the Ark to embrace this valuable process in-house, enabling them to get great insight into their customers and how they use the app.
Continuous product improvement on a monthly basis to iterate the app based based on user feedback and business direction to ensure growth.

Sparkyard won the prestigious Music and Drama Education Awards for being an Outstanding Education Resource.
“Hiring Deckchair was the single most important and impactful decision I made in managing this project. Their skill and experience is beyond question, and their willingness to understand our particular ethos, strengths, weaknesses and pressures has been truly invaluable in bringing to life a complex and challenging product. If we hadn’t employed Deckchair for this work, we’d have taken three times as long to get a quarter of the impact.”
